Two individuals are currently in custody at the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) facing bribery charges linked to the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources. One of the accused is a former officer from the ministry, while the other is a former director of a construction company. Both are alleged to have offered a bribe exceeding $7,000 to influence the awarding of three tenders associated with the ministry.

The court case is set to take place this afternoon at the Suva Magistrates’ Court. This incident underscores the ongoing commitment to combating corruption within Fiji’s public sector, echoing past cases where authorities have taken firm action against financial misconduct. For instance, in recent proceedings involving former accountant Pawan Deo and his wife at the Fiji Rugby Union, similar concerns around accountability and ethics in financial practices were highlighted.

These actions from FICAC demonstrate a heightened vigilance towards transparency and integrity in public service roles, reinforcing the idea that such conduct will not be tolerated. As the legal process unfolds, it is hoped that it leads to stronger regulations and cultivates an environment of accountability, ultimately contributing to improving governance within Fiji.
