A senior police officer is facing allegations of accepting a $10,000 bribe to secure the release of three men accused of the murder of Afroz Khan. The accusation emerged during a court appearance of the suspects—Edward Nand, Semi Naisevunivai, and Viliame Vulawalu—at the High Court in Suva.

According to prosecutors, the trio is believed to have abducted Khan, demanding a ransom of $10,000 from his wife. They instructed her to leave the payment in a rubbish bin near Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. Following the failure to deliver the ransom, the suspects are accused of assaulting Khan and subsequently drowning him in a river in Naitasiri, with the alleged crime occurring between November 27 and December 27, 2024.

Prosecutor Unaisi Ratukalou has confirmed that an investigation into the bribery allegations is currently underway, with Nand serving as the complainant. The prosecution has requested an additional 14 days to investigate these claims to ascertain their effect on the ongoing murder case.

The court proceedings are set to continue, with the case adjourned until February 20. The situation underscores the complexity and seriousness of the allegations, impacting not just the suspects but also the integrity of the police force involved.
