Beyond the headline

In the latest development for grassroots rugby in the West, Breakthrough Westfield Rugby Club unveiled new playing jerseys on Thursday night in Lautoka as it prepares for the Lautoka Rugby Union Super 16 Premier Division competition. The kit, produced with support from sponsors Genesis Investment and ABL Designs, carries a distinctive message of faith and humility drawn from the Epistle of James 4:10 — “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up” — which the club says underpins its approach this season.

Club manager Steven Ledua told reporters the Breakthrough project began in Suva through the World Harvest Church and expanded to Lautoka in 2022. After taking part in Yasawa Rugby Union club fixtures, the team formally joined the Lautoka Rugby Union in 2023, marking a steady progression into more competitive local structures. Ledua said the new jerseys are more than a uniform; they represent the club’s identity, values and renewed commitment to player development.

Ledua highlighted Breakthrough Westfield’s contribution to player pathways in Fiji, noting that the club has produced athletes who advanced to national honours, including Mesulame Dolokoto. He confirmed that eight players from Breakthrough Westfield are currently representing Lautoka Rugby Union and that two club players have earned selection to the Fiji Warriors squad — an indicator of the club’s growing role as a feeder for higher-level teams. Former captain Isaia Rugu has since moved on to play for Yaro Chiefs, Ledua added.

Sponsors Genesis Investment and ABL Designs were credited with making the new kit possible. The club framed the partnership as part of a wider trend of private backing helping to sustain grassroots rugby across the islands, providing essential resources that improve player welfare, appearance and unity on the field. Such support follows other recent initiatives in Fiji where companies have donated jerseys and equipment to strengthen community rugby programs.

As Breakthrough Westfield readies for the Super 16 Premier Division, the management said the jersey launch is intended to boost morale within the squad and the club’s wider supporter base in Lautoka. Ledua stressed the importance of humility and faith — the values referenced on the kit — as guiding principles for players as they compete and pursue opportunities at provincial and national levels.

The unveiling also serves to raise the club’s profile within the Lautoka rugby scene as it seeks to consolidate its place in the union’s competitions and continue producing talent for Fiji’s representative teams. With local backing and clear development pathways, Breakthrough Westfield aims to translate its recent administrative and branding milestones into on-field progress this season.
