Mark Shaheel Lal is challenging the stigma around HIV after receiving his diagnosis on May 1 of this year. Despite the initial shock of learning he was HIV-positive, Lal found strength through the unwavering support of his family and friends, enabling him to face his journey with resilience.
Amidst a worrying increase in HIV cases within the country, Mr. Lal has chosen to share his personal story publicly, aiming to inspire a shift in perceptions among the youth. His advocacy work focuses on LGBTQ+ rights and empowering young individuals to break free from the shackles of stigma.
Official reports from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services reveal a concerning statistic—552 new HIV cases reported from January to June 2024, alongside 13 deaths from HIV-related illnesses during the same timeframe. This marks a stark contrast to the 82 deaths reported in 2023, underscoring the urgent need for awareness and education.
At just 23 years old, Mr. Lal has transformed what might have been a narrative of despair into one of empowerment. He emphasizes the importance of knowing one’s health status and advocates for immediate testing and treatment management for those diagnosed with HIV. “Don’t bow to stigma,” he urges, reflecting on the overwhelming negative perceptions surrounding the disease.
Since coming out publicly, Mr. Lal’s efforts have been met with an outpouring of support, reaching individuals even as far as Korea and India. He highlights that stigma remains a significant barrier for many people living with HIV, with fears of judgment and potential ostracism often preventing them from seeking help.
With the right treatment, such as antiretroviral therapy, Mr. Lal insists that living a healthy life with HIV is entirely possible. He believes in the power of support and communication, which he refers to as essential in humanizing sensitive topics like HIV.
Reflecting on his advocacy journey, Mr. Lal emphasized that better mental and physical support systems are necessary to help young people feel safe and secure about their HIV status. He acknowledges the efforts of the Ministry of Health but believes more needs to be done to equip healthcare services to address HIV cases effectively.
Mr. Lal made history as the first person in Fiji since 2015 to publicly announce his HIV status. In a recent appearance during the World AIDS Day celebration in Nadi, he expressed his commitment to breaking his silence about living with HIV. “Today, I am stepping out of that silence and into the light,” he stated proudly, emphasizing that he is more than his diagnosis.
His resilience and courage resonate with many, as he concludes on a hopeful note about his journey. “For every tear I’ve shed, for every fear I’ve faced, I have emerged stronger, more whole. I stand tall today, not in spite of HIV, but because of it.”
