Mark Shaheel Lal is bravely confronting the stigma surrounding HIV after receiving his diagnosis on May 1 of this year. Initially overwhelmed by the news, he found strength in the support of family and friends, enabling him to embark on a transformative journey.
As HIV cases continue to rise in the country—with 552 new cases reported from January to June 2024—Mr. Lal has chosen to share his story to inspire young people and promote awareness. He is an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and youth empowerment, aiming to foster a more open dialogue about HIV.
During this same timeframe, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services recorded thirteen deaths due to HIV-related illnesses, a stark contrast to the 82 reported deaths in 2023. Mr. Lal, diagnosed at the age of 23, has turned a potentially despairing situation into one of empowerment. By publicly sharing his experience, he challenges the pervasive stigma associated with HIV.
“The stigma surrounding HIV is still overwhelming,” Mr. Lal stated, emphasizing the urgency for individuals to know their health status and to seek treatment if diagnosed. His courageous decision to speak out during the World AIDS Day event in Nadi has garnered positive feedback from people around the world, including individuals from Korea and India who reached out to share their own stories.
Mr. Lal believes that stigma can greatly hinder individuals from seeking help. He noted that fear of judgment or losing family can prevent people from addressing their health. He reassures others that HIV, when managed with proper treatment such as antiretroviral therapy (ARVs), does not equate to a death sentence but allows for a fulfilling and healthy life.
The overwhelming support he’s received reinforces the importance of his advocacy work, which he intends to continue. He acknowledges the need for sensitive discussions surrounding HIV, emphasizing education, compassion, and understanding to help break down barriers.
He has become a powerful voice for both the Indo-Fijian and i-Taukei communities, emphasizing the importance of better mental and physical support systems for young people. Mr. Lal commends the Ministry of Health for its efforts but advocates for improved medical resources to effectively address HIV.
In a bold declaration, Mr. Lal highlighted that he is the first person in Fiji since 2015 to publicly announce living with HIV. His powerful words at the Nadi World AIDS Day event marked a significant step in his journey, stating, “I am the first Indian gay man in my community to come out as HIV positive, and I share this truth with immense pride.”
Reflecting on his growth through this experience, he remarked, “I stand tall today, not in spite of HIV, but because of it. It has been the fire that has forged me, the storm that shaped me.”
