Men facing domestic violence, relationship challenges, and other physical and psychological issues are encouraged to seek help from counselors. Mohenesh Singh, counselor and founder of Healing Hands Foundation Fiji, emphasizes that support is available for men dealing with suicidal thoughts.
“It is crucial for men to break the silence and report to police if they feel their rights are being violated,” Mr. Singh stated. He advised those feeling scared, isolated, ashamed, or confused to reach out to organizations like his for assistance.
Mr. Singh dedicates time to educating young men on problem-solving strategies, stating, “Men should share their experiences to avoid dwelling on suicidal thoughts.” In the Northern Division, he reports that five to six men reach out to him daily to discuss their struggles.
His observations indicate that prominent factors contributing to male suicides include domestic violence, relationship issues, and financial struggles. Additionally, men involved with alcohol and drugs are at a higher risk of suicide.
Mr. Singh highlighted societal pressures in Fiji that discourage men from reporting their experiences of abuse. “In Fiji, the expectation to project an image of a ‘strong man’ often hinders men from seeking help or counseling,” he noted. He stresses the importance of recognizing that the cycle of abuse is unlikely to end unless proactive steps are taken.
According to police suicide statistics for January to October 2023, men accounted for the highest number of suicide and attempted suicide cases, with 90 incidents involving males compared to 40 involving females.
