Men facing domestic violence, relationship challenges, and other physical and psychological issues are encouraged to seek assistance from counselors. Mohenesh Singh, a counselor and founder of the Healing Hands Foundation in Fiji, emphasizes that support is available for men combating suicidal thoughts.
“It is essential for men to break the silence and report to the authorities if their rights are being violated,” Mr. Singh stated. He added that those feeling scared, isolated, confused, ashamed, or afraid can find help through organizations like his.
Mr. Singh dedicates his time to advocating for young men, teaching them strategies to address their problems. “It is crucial for men to share their experiences to avoid dwelling on suicidal thoughts,” he mentioned.
He noted that each day in the Northern Division, five to six men come to him to discuss their issues. Mr. Singh observed that key factors contributing to male suicides include domestic violence from partners, relationship troubles, and financial stress. Additionally, men who engage in alcohol and drug use are at a heightened risk for suicidal behavior.
According to him, societal attitudes in Fiji discourage men from reporting their experiences of abuse. “The expectation to be a ‘strong man’ often prevents men from seeking counseling or assistance,” he explained. “Overcoming these fears may be challenging, but it is essential to understand that the abuse will likely persist until action is taken to escape it.”
A suicide report from the police for national statistics between January and October 2023 revealed that men recorded the highest instances of suicide and attempted suicide cases. A total of 90 cases were reported for men, compared to 40 for women.
