Concerns regarding HIV management and stigma have been highlighted recently, with UNAIDS Pacific and Fiji country director Renata Ram emphasizing that there is currently no evidence supporting the effectiveness of herbal medicines in curing or treating HIV. She reiterated that the only proven method to manage HIV is through antiretroviral medication.

Ram’s comments come at a critical time when discussions surrounding HIV treatment are essential in Fiji. In the past, there has been a worrying trend of individuals relying on alternative treatments, which can severely jeopardize their health. Approximately 2,000 individuals are estimated to be living with HIV in Fiji, according to UNAIDS, yet only 1,049 are receiving adequate treatment, leaving a significant number undiagnosed or lost to care.

The stigma associated with HIV remains a formidable barrier to testing and treatment. Ram pointed out that those living with the virus should be the voices in educating the community about their experiences. Recently, a 23-year-old individual openly shared his HIV status on World AIDS Day, garnering support and encouraging others to get tested, which highlights the impact of personal stories in combating stigma.

Moreover, adherence to antiretroviral therapy can lead to an undetectable viral load, effectively preventing transmission and enabling individuals to live a normal life. Ram equated managing HIV to managing other chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension—through consistent medication and health awareness.

The Ministry of Health is actively tackling the challenges related to HIV by raising awareness and encouraging people to seek testing and treatment. Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu has voiced similar concerns about the low numbers of individuals receiving treatment and the increasing deaths related to AIDS.

As these public health discussions continue, there is a promising message that with the right treatment and community support, individuals living with HIV can lead long, fulfilling lives. The collective efforts of health authorities, community organizations, and individuals can foster a shift towards understanding and support, ultimately improving the health outcomes in Fiji.
