Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has made a passionate plea to community and religious leaders to help dismantle the culture of silence surrounding sexual offenses, especially those impacting women and children. This appeal follows a concerning 25 percent surge in reported sexual crimes last month, revealing the urgent need for collective action against such violations.
Tudravu highlighted that nearly 23 percent of these offenses were perpetrated by individuals familiar to the victims, underlining the perilous dynamics in domestic spaces. Alarmingly, crimes against women have risen by 20 percent, with 37 percent of these incidents occurring at home, typically involving spouses or intimate partners. The statistics indicate that 89 percent of the crimes against women were assault-related, while the remaining 11 percent were categorized as sexual offenses.
Moreover, there has been an eight percent increase in crimes against children, with 68 percent of the recorded 114 cases being sexual offenses. Tudravu expressed grave concern regarding the rise of defilement cases among young individuals aged 13 to 16 years, emphasizing that proactive involvement from leaders at all levels is crucial to safeguard women and children.
The recent trends are echoed by previous reports that have identified similar alarming increases in domestic violence and sexual offenses. In a prior article, it was noted that crimes against women had increased by 19 percent, with a significant portion of these incidents occurring in domestic environments.
