Although grappling with this unexpected reality was a daunting task, Lal’s network of family and friends played a pivotal role in helping him navigate the complexities of his situation.

With the increasing number of HIV cases in Fiji, Lal is using his story as a beacon of hope, aiming to inspire young individuals to rethink their perceptions around the virus. Data from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services shows a troubling rise in HIV cases, with 552 new diagnoses recorded from January to June 2024, and 13 deaths related to HIV in that same timeframe.

Diagnosed at just 23, Lal has transformed what could have been a tale of despair into a narrative of empowerment. By sharing his experience publicly, he aims to combat stereotypes and challenge the stigma attached to living with HIV. He emphasizes the importance of knowing one’s health status and encourages those who test positive to seek treatment and manage their health without fear of judgment.

Since coming out during this year’s World AIDS Day celebration in Nadi, Lal has received an overwhelming amount of support, even connecting with individuals from as far as Korea and India who have shared their own journeys. He acknowledges the significant impact of stigma on individuals living with HIV, which often leads to isolation and fear. “HIV is manageable,” he asserts, highlighting that proper treatment, including antiretroviral therapy, allows individuals to lead healthy lives.

Lal is committed to continuing his advocacy and urges the need for more education, empathy, and resources to address the HIV crisis effectively. He believes sensitive subjects need to be ‘humanized’ to ensure appropriate conversations can take place.

Mr. Lal identifies as the first Fijian to publicly announce his HIV status since 2015, expressing pride in his identity as a gay man living with HIV. “I am not my diagnosis. I am my courage, my love, my strength,” he declares, revealing that he has emerged from his experience stronger and more empowered.
