Two men recently completed their training in caregiving as part of a program at the National Employment Centre, challenging the notion that caregiving roles are primarily for women. Sanjay Narain Sharma, 47, and Alivereti Tagivetaua, 33, were among 41 individuals who graduated with their Certificate III in Individual Support (Aging) at the Calvary Temple last Friday.

This initiative is funded by the Australian Aged Care Expansion (ACE) program, integrated within the Pacific Australia Labour and Mobility (PALM) scheme. The theoretical training for the participants was provided by Alphacrucis University College, an Australian educational institution recognized by the Fijian Higher Education Commission.

Mr. Sharma discovered his passion for caregiving while caring for his mother before her passing in 2022. He expressed that caring for others brings immense fulfillment. “I gained experience from looking after elderly family members and found my passion when caring for my mother,” he stated. He also emphasized his commitment to representing Fiji well through the National Employment Centre program.

Mr. Tagivetaua noted that the most significant challenge he faced was successfully completing the practical training segment, which is essential for graduation. He shared a personal connection to caregiving, mentioning that he never had the chance to care for his grandparents. “This opportunity allows me to show love that I couldn’t give them,” he said.

Gaayetri Prasad, the Foreign Employment Services manager at the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations, recognized the trainees’ achievements and reminded them of their role as representatives of Fiji when they go to Australia. She urged them to conduct themselves honorably, stating that they would be paving the way for others interested in similar opportunities.

The graduates will officially receive their diplomas next June.
