Breaking Barriers: Young Woman Pursues Tile Laying in a Male-Dominated Industry

Ruci Vukialau is set to thrive in a male-dominated industry following her graduation from Fiji National University in Nasinu. The 19-year-old recently obtained her Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling after completing a 12-week training program with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC).

Her interest in tile laying was ignited while observing her father as he worked on home repairs and upgrades. She described the training as challenging, particularly since most of her classmates were male.

“There were times I found it hard to express myself in class, often choosing to remain silent while working alongside them,” said Ms. Vukialau. Despite the difficulties, she was determined to succeed and progress in her career. “It was exhausting at times, but I had a supportive group encouraging me to continue my studies. Clinging to my faith kept me motivated to complete the course.”

As she looks ahead to entering the workforce, Ruci is aware of the long hours and ongoing availability that the job entails, which can create challenges for those managing family and personal responsibilities.
