Eleina McDonald, the operations and events manager for Fijian Drua, shared her experiences and challenges as the first woman to serve as team manager for the Flying Fijians during the recent International Women’s Day celebration in Lautoka. McDonald reflected on her journey, acknowledging the hurdles she faced in what is often considered a male-dominated arena, specifically within rugby.

“Much of the attention is directed at being the first woman in this field,” she remarked. “However, what many overlook are the smaller, persistent challenges that come with proving yourself each day in a role that should be about doing your job.” She emphasized the necessity of garnering support in her position, which she viewed as a vital learning experience.

McDonald pointed out the importance of self-awareness among women, advocating for understanding when to show vulnerability as part of their leadership journey. “Rugby is often described as a boy’s club, but that doesn’t exclude women from excelling in these spaces,” she noted, encouraging others to believe in themselves and their capabilities.

The importance of women’s empowerment in sports is a recurring theme not just in McDonald’s story, but also highlighted by other female athletes in Fiji. For instance, Vika Nakacia, who recently joined the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s squad for the upcoming Dubai tournament, has voiced similar sentiments. She faced both financial obstacles and skepticism about her place in sports yet persevered through determination and self-belief. Similarly, Adi Mereoni Vakacerevuna Uluiviti’s appointment as the manager of Fiji’s senior women’s cricket team showcases strides towards empowering women in sports, further emphasizing the increasing recognition of their roles in competitive environments.

These narratives inspire hope for many aspiring female athletes in Fiji, serving as a reminder that with resilience and support, they can break through barriers and achieve their dreams in sports. As these women continue to pave the way, their journeys ignite a positive transformation in the perception and support of women’s sports in the region. Their experiences reflect not only personal achievements but also a broader movement towards gender equality in athletics.
