Fiji National University (FNU) graduate Grace Sovalawa emphasized the need for more women in the field of land surveying during the institution’s Open Day in Nasinu on Friday.
“I primarily learned to use AutoCAD, which is a 2D and 3D computer-aided design software, along with various surveying techniques,” Ms. Sovalawa mentioned. She noted that the program also covers aspects related to architecture and requirements in engineering, such as building construction.
The 21-year-old from Suvalailai, Rewa, obtained her diploma in Land Survey after three years of study. She highlighted that although the field is often male-dominated, women can thrive in it with determination. “This profession is accessible to everyone, but it can be challenging for women due to the competitive environment. Nevertheless, if you are driven, you can succeed in this industry,” she stated.
Ms. Sovalawa pointed out the shortage of land surveyors in Fiji and stressed the importance of attracting more women to this career path. She described the profession as well-suited for women who enjoy outdoor activities like camping and sightseeing.
“A number of students may find the calculations challenging since the program heavily involves math and physics, but peer support is available,” she added. The entry requirements for the program include passing grades in both English and Mathematics, with a minimum score of 200 out of 400.
She also mentioned the extracurricular opportunities provided by the university, such as the Fiji University Sports Association (FUSA) games and debates. “The advantage of this course is that it allows students to transfer credits to the University of the South Pacific (USP) and pursue Geographic Information System (GIS) studies,” she stated.
Additionally, Ms. Sovalawa informed that students can apply for scholarships abroad. She is currently working as a chainman/survey technician at KGenesis Engineering and Consultant Pte Ltd.
