Breaking Barriers: Women in Land Surveying at Fiji National University

Grace Sovalawa, a graduate of Fiji National University (FNU), emphasized the need for more women in the field of land surveying during the institution’s Open Day in Nasinu on Friday.

“I primarily learned to use AutoCAD, a computer-aided design software for both 2D and 3D applications, along with various surveying techniques for different land types,” said Ms. Sovalawa. She also mentioned the importance of architecture and engineering in her studies, which included building construction.

At just 21 years old and hailing from Suvalailai, Rewa, Ms. Sovalawa recently received her diploma in Land Survey after three years of hard work.

“This field is accessible to all, but entering a male-dominated profession presents challenges for women. However, with determination, success is achievable,” she remarked. She noted the shortage of land surveyors in Fiji and called for more women to join the profession.

Ms. Sovalawa highlighted that a career in land surveying appeals to women who enjoy outdoor activities, such as camping and sightseeing.

“Some students may find the calculations in this program, which heavily involves math and physics, challenging, but peer support is available,” she added.

To enroll in the program, students must achieve passing grades in both English and Math, with a minimum score of 200 out of 400.

Additionally, she mentioned that the university offers extracurricular options, including FUSA (Fiji University Sports Association) games and debate competitions.

“The advantage of this course is the opportunity to transfer credits to the University of the South Pacific (USP) and pursue GIS (Geographic Information Systems),” she noted.

Ms. Sovalawa is currently employed at KGenesis Engineering and Consultant Pte Ltd as a chainman/survey technician.
