Breaking Barriers: Women in Engineering Shine at Fiji Sugar Corporation

An apprentice program at the Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) is achieving remarkable success, opening doors for women in engineering, a field traditionally dominated by men. One standout participant is Siobahn Bogidrau, a 20-year-old electrical fitter apprentice at the Lautoka Mill. Siobahn embodies the values of determination and resilience, emphasizing the importance of setting goals and staying focused.

She believes that women can also excel in engineering, despite the absence of female role models in her upbringing. Her interest in the field was sparked during career classes in high school, prompting her to join the FSC Apprentice Program in 2024 after encouragement from her peers. The program has provided her with essential hands-on experience and technical training, aiding her professional development.

The FSC Apprentice Program aims to equip young individuals with the skills necessary for successful careers in engineering and technical areas. Participants undergo a thorough training process, marrying theoretical knowledge with practical applications that include electrical maintenance and mechanical repairs, particularly relevant to the sugar industry. This comprehensive training fosters both technical proficiency and a collaborative spirit among apprentices.

Siobahn has benefitted immensely from the program, stating, “FSC has provided me with both on-the-job training and technical skills, making me feel confident in my work every day.” She appreciates the equal treatment and encouragement she receives, which has deepened her commitment to her work and the sugar industry.

Her aspirations extend beyond personal growth; she is dedicated to contributing to the sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry. Siobahn feels proud to support its strength and growth. Looking forward, she is motivated to further her education in engineering, viewing her current skills as only the beginning.

To young women considering careers in male-dominated fields, Siobahn encourages perseverance and self-belief, stating, “Women can achieve just as much as men in any field, including engineering. Believe in yourself and go for it.”

Applications for the 2025 FSC Apprentice Program will open in November.
