Breaking Barriers: Ruth Garry’s Inspiring Journey in Fijian Law

Ruth Garry recently embarked on a promising career in law after being admitted to the bar in Fiji. With her dedication to service and a strong belief in the power of education, Ms. Garry emphasizes that school serves as more than just a place to gain knowledge—it’s a supportive environment where students can learn from their mistakes.

Originally from Suva, Ms. Garry credits her family background for broadening her horizons; her father hails from Kiribati, while her mother is from Rabi. This diverse upbringing sparked her interest in law, much of which was influenced by her cousins. She holds a double degree in International Relations and Law from Bond University, where she graduated in 2022.

Ms. Garry took a brief hiatus from her studies to care for her grandmother, and upon her passing, she returned with renewed focus and completed her Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP). Reflecting on her journey, she dedicates her new legal career to both her grandmothers, recognizing their roles as strong women who motivated her throughout her education.

Currently, she is gaining valuable experience under the mentorship of Feizal Haniff, one of Fiji’s seasoned litigators. Throughout her journey, she has maintained that it is crucial for students to embrace the learning process without fear. “When you go to school, don’t be nervous—every other student is in the same boat. It’s your opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them,” she encourages.

This message resonates with other young lawyers in Fiji who have also made significant strides in their careers, such as Milika Ligabalavu, who transitioned from a judicial role to a guidance counselor, and Shyyal Kumar, who recently graduated law school and aspires to become a criminal lawyer. Their stories exemplify resilience, dedication, and the importance of familial support in overcoming challenges.

As Ms. Garry steps into her legal career, her journey reflects a growing trend of young professionals in Fiji striving to make a meaningful impact in their communities. Her commitment to learning and serving as a role model for future generations is an inspiring testament to the transformative power of education and perseverance.
