Ruci Vukialau is on the verge of achieving her dream in a male-dominated industry after graduating from Fiji National University. The 19-year-old recently earned her Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling, following 12 weeks of training with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition.
Her interest in tile laying was ignited as she observed her father making repairs and improvements to their home. Vukialau acknowledged that the training posed challenges, particularly as she was often the only woman among her male classmates.
“There were times I found it hard to express myself in class, often choosing to remain silent while working alongside them,” she shared. However, her determination to succeed in the workforce fuelled her perseverance, even during exhausting times. She expressed gratitude for her supportive peers, which helped her stay motivated to complete the course.
As she prepares to enter the workforce, Vukialau is aware of the long hours and reliability required in the field, which may be difficult for those managing family and personal responsibilities.
