Breaking Barriers: Men Embrace Caregiving in Fiji’s Aged Care Training Program

Two men recently participated in a caregiving training program, challenging the notion that caregiving roles are primarily for women. Sanjay Narain Sharma, 47, and Alivereti Tagivetaua, 33, were among 41 graduates of the National Employment Centre’s third cohort to earn their Certificate III in Individual Support (Aging) at Calvary Temple last Friday.

This initiative is funded by the Australian Aged Care Expansion (ACE) program, part of the Pacific Australia Labour and Mobility (PALM) scheme. The theoretical component of the training was provided by Alphacrucis University College, an Australian educational institution recognized by the Fijian Higher Education Commission.

Mr. Sharma shared that his interest in caregiving blossomed while caring for his mother before her passing in 2022. He expressed the profound satisfaction he feels from helping others, stating, “I gained the experience from taking care of my other family members who are old; I found passion when I took care of my own mother before she passed away two years back.”

Mr. Tagivetaua highlighted his biggest challenge: succeeding in the practical training, which is essential for graduation. He remarked on the missed opportunities to care for his grandparents, who passed away when he was very young. “This will be a good chance for me to show people the love I couldn’t give my grandparents,” he said.

Gaayetri Prasad, manager of Foreign Employment Services at the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, acknowledged the trainees and emphasized their role as representatives of Fiji in Australia. “As you go there, know that you are representing Fiji, and make sure to carry yourself well, because you will be gateways for others who also want to pursue this program,” she advised.

The graduates are expected to complete their training by June next year.
