Breaking Barriers: Meet the Young Woman Ready to Conquer Tiling

Ruci Vukialau is set to make her mark in a traditionally male-dominated industry as she graduates with a Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling from Fiji National University. At 19 years old, Ms. Vukialau completed 12 weeks of training with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) and is poised to enter the workforce soon.

Her aspiration to become a tile layer was ignited by her experiences watching her father undertake home repairs and improvements. Despite the challenges she faced during her training, particularly in a classroom filled mostly with male peers, Ms. Vukialau remained determined to succeed.

“There were times I found it hard to express myself in class, often choosing to remain silent while working alongside them,” she shared. “But I had a dream to succeed and advance in the workforce. It was exhausting at times, but I had a supportive group encouraging me to continue my studies. Clinging to my faith kept me motivated to complete the course.”

As she prepares to enter the workforce, Ms. Vukialau is aware of the demanding nature of the job, which often requires long hours and flexibility—factors that can complicate balancing family and personal obligations.
