Kelera Vela has demonstrated the potential for women to excel in traditionally male-dominated fields during the Pacific Polytech graduation ceremony held at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa. Among the 105 graduates, Vela, a 30-year-old mother of two, stood out as a former volunteer firefighter with seven years of service at the National Fire Authority’s Taveuni and Labasa stations.
Originally from Vuniwai Village, Seaqaqa, Macuata, she successfully earned a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Level Three. Vela emphasized the capability of female electricians, stating, “Female electricians can do equally well as male, and I want to be one of them.”
After completing her secondary education at All Saints Secondary School in Labasa, Vela dedicated time to volunteer firefighting before becoming a full-time mother to her children, aged three and nine. She expressed gratitude towards her husband, Salato Ramoce, for supporting her decision to further her education, acknowledging the challenges of balancing her roles as a mother, wife, and student.
Vela highlighted the importance of supportive trainers in creating a conducive learning environment, which greatly encourages students to pursue their education. She urged women to follow their passions and careers, regardless of the male dominance in technical fields.
This inspirational story not only showcases Vela’s determination but also serves as a motivating example for women everywhere to challenge gender stereotypes and pursue their dreams in any profession. It is a reminder that with perseverance and support, barriers can be broken, paving the way for future generations to succeed in diverse careers.
