Kelera Vela has demonstrated that women can succeed in traditionally male-dominated fields during the graduation ceremony at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa. The event celebrated the achievements of 105 graduates, among them Vela, a former firefighter who volunteered for seven years at National Fire Authority stations in Taveuni and Labasa.

At 30 years old and a mother of two, Vela, who hails from Vuniwai Village in Seaqaqa, Macuata, earned a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Level Three. She expressed her determination, stating, “Female electricians can do equally well as male, and I want to be one of them.”

Vela’s journey saw her transitioning from a firefighter volunteer to a dedicated homemaker, caring for her children aged three and nine, before returning to education. She expressed gratitude towards her husband, Salato Ramoce, who is employed at Bula Earthworks, for allowing her to pursue her studies.

“It wasn’t easy juggling the roles of a mother, wife, and student, but with the support of my husband and trainers, I managed,” she shared. Vela highlighted the importance of understanding trainers in creating a supportive learning environment, which encourages students to complete their education.

She encourages other women to follow their career aspirations, regardless of the barriers posed by male dominance in various trades.

This inspiring story not only celebrates Vela’s personal achievement but also serves as a beacon of hope for women everywhere, reinforcing the belief that determination and support can break barriers to success in any field.
