Kelera Vela has demonstrated that women can excel in traditionally male-dominated fields, as showcased during the Pacific Polytech graduation ceremony at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa yesterday. Vela, a former firefighter volunteer for seven years, graduated among 105 fellow students, showcasing her resilience and determination.

At 30 years old and a mother of two, Vela hails from Vuniwai Village in Seaqaqa, Macuata. She earned a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Level Three. Vela expressed her commitment to breaking barriers in her field, stating, “Female electricians can do equally well as male, and I want to be one of them.”

After completing Year 13 at All Saints Secondary School in Labasa, Vela took on the role of a firefighter volunteer before stepping back to focus on her family and children, aged three and nine. She expressed gratitude to her husband, Salato Ramoce, for supporting her education and allowing her to pursue her passions.

“It wasn’t easy juggling the responsibilities of being a mother, wife, and student, but I managed thanks to the support of my husband and my trainers,” she noted. Vela emphasized the importance of understanding trainers in creating a conducive learning environment, which is vital for student success.

Vela’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder for women to pursue their dream careers, despite the prevailing male dominance in various trade occupations. Her story reflects the growing empowerment of women in the workforce and the importance of support systems in achieving personal and professional goals.

This hope-filled narrative is a testament to the fact that with determination and support, women can thrive and create space for themselves in all areas of work.
