Jese Dautei Robinson has etched his name in history as the only male nurse to graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery among a cohort of 12 nurses in Labasa. His exceptional academic performance earned him three distinguished awards: Academic Excellence in Normal Puerperium and Newborn, Academic Excellence in Normal Labour and Birth, and Overall Academic Excellence in the program.

The 32-year-old, hailing from Vunikodi Village, Udu, Macuata, celebrated his accomplishments yesterday during the graduation ceremony at the TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education held at the Civic Centre in Labasa. Currently serving as a nurse at Nasea Health Centre, Mr. Robinson’s decision to enter the nursing field was fueled by a personal tragedy—the loss of his father, Veveni Robinson, when he was in Year 11. This life-changing event motivated him to support his family and community as the second eldest of eight siblings.

Robinson’s choice to specialize in midwifery reflects his desire to provide compassionate care and support to mothers. “I chose to become a midwife, even though I am a male nurse, because I want to become a good father,” he shared. His wife, a fellow nurse at Labasa Hospital, complements his commitment to healthcare, further solidifying their shared dedication to patient care.

Driven by the joy of childbirth, Robinson upgraded his qualifications with the mission of assisting mothers in delivering their babies safely. He articulates the profound satisfaction that comes from helping to bring new life into the world, stating, “To help bring a life into this world and place it in a mother’s arms is the purest joy.”

In addition to his personal achievements, he advocates for increased inclusivity within the nursing profession, emphasizing that it transcends gender boundaries. “Nursing is a beautiful profession where there is no boundary set between genders. I encourage people to pursue a career in this field,” he remarked.

Jese Robinson’s remarkable accomplishments and passionate advocacy not only challenge stereotypes but also serve as an inspiration for others to pursue their aspirations, highlighting that kindness and expertise know no gender.

This narrative serves as a hopeful reminder that anyone can break down barriers in traditionally gendered fields and that personal experiences can lead to meaningful professional paths. Robinson’s journey underscores the importance of compassion in healthcare, inspiring others to follow suit.
