Kelera Vela has made a significant statement about women’s potential in traditionally male-dominated fields during the Pacific Polytech graduation ceremony held at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa.

Vela, who has volunteered as a firefighter for seven years at the National Fire Authority stations in Taveuni and Labasa, was among the 105 graduates and received a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Level Three. At 30 years old and a mother of two, Vela hails from Vuniwai Village in Seaqaqa, Macuata.

In her remarks, she emphasized that women can excel just as well as men in technical professions, expressing her aspiration to become a successful electrician. Vela’s journey included balancing the roles of mother, wife, and student after completing her education at All Saints Secondary School, before taking time off to care for her young children, now aged three and nine.

Acknowledging the invaluable support from her husband, Salato Ramoce, who works at Bula Earthworks, Vela noted the challenges of juggling multiple responsibilities but highlighted the importance of understanding trainers in creating a conducive learning environment.

She encouraged other women to pursue their career aspirations despite the prevalent male dominance in trade occupations, inspiring them to overcome barriers and follow their dreams.

This story serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of support systems and the potential for women to thrive in any field they choose. Vela’s success not only highlights her personal perseverance but also sets a motivational example for others aiming to break through gender barriers in their careers.
