Lautoka beach volleyball teammates Laite Nima and Sera Speed are challenging the norms surrounding age and motherhood as they compete in the FVF Beach Volleyball series at Laucala Bay in Suva. These two athletes are not just aiming for personal glory; they are also looking to inspire other mothers and young athletes, especially in the Western Division where access to beach volleyball facilities is often scarce.
Having previously represented Fiji at the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands, Nima and Speed are determined to secure their place on the national team for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau. “We are mothers, and we are proud to represent the West,” Nima stated, sharing their desire to show that dedication and hard work can lead to competing at elite levels, regardless of personal circumstances.
Speed discovered her love for beach volleyball while living in Australia, finding it an exhilarating blend of competition and freedom. “I’ve always loved the outdoors, and beach volleyball felt natural to me,” she shared. Despite facing unique challenges as they compete in a sport that has been primarily concentrated in Suva, they are determined to showcase the hidden talent in the Western Division, which suffers from a lack of infrastructure and support.
Nima and Speed refuse to be seen as underdogs, with Nima declaring, “We’re not here to make up the numbers. We’re here to compete.” Their journey reflects the rising movement within Fiji’s sports community to cultivate talent regardless of age or background.
Their aspirations resonate with emerging beach volleyball players and teams across Fiji, illustrating a broader narrative of hope and support for aspiring athletes. Nima and Speed’s efforts highlight a positive shift in Fiji’s sports culture, showcasing women paving the way for future generations and establishing new standards in athleticism.
