Breaking Barriers: Ema Bi’s Inspiring Journey in Nursing and Beyond

Ema Bi, a 46-year-old widow and mother of two from Tuatua, Labasa, has made remarkable strides in her educational career, demonstrating that determination knows no age barriers. At the recent graduation ceremony of TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education, she was celebrated for earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Leadership and Management.

Ms. Bi, who works at the Labasa Health Centre, stood out by receiving six esteemed awards, including Overall Academic Excellence. Her accomplishments also highlighted her excellence in vital subjects such as Nursing Leadership in the 21st Century and Strategic Management in Nursing.

In her reflection, Ms. Bi acknowledged the profound challenges she’s faced, especially after the loss of her husband, Ashad Ali, who was her strongest supporter and encouraged her to pursue her academic aspirations. She recalled his dream of seeing her graduate with pride.

As a nurse practitioner with 24 years of experience, Ms. Bi is balancing her postgraduate studies alongside her pursuit of a Master of Business Administration (MBA). She credited her mentor, Selina Waqa Ledua from the Fiji National Council, along with her family and friends, for their unwavering support throughout her journey.

“I keep reminding myself that this is not the end of the road. With a positive mindset, anything is possible,” she stated. Passionate about her profession, Ms. Bi believes that nursing is the best career choice, allowing her to significantly impact people’s lives.

Her ultimate aspiration is to become a chief nurse, and she encourages others to aim high. “To mothers and widows, I say, never give up. Age is just a number, and God has given us one life to live. Make it count,” she said.
