Twenty-one-year-old Salanieta ‘Big Shirley’ Nabuli has made a significant impact in the rugby world by securing a position in the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7’s team for the 2023 WXV last year. Hailing from Vatubalavu village in the highlands of Navosa, she has become the first female athlete from her village and surrounding area to join the national women’s rugby team.
Nabuli began her rugby career with the Navosa Women’s rugby team last year and was soon selected to compete in the WXV tournaments held in Japan and Dubai. Expressing her excitement about traveling to such far-off places, she fondly recalled trying authentic sushi during her trip.
Leaving Dudley High School after Form 6, Nabuli chose to assist her parents on their family farm. Being the eldest of three siblings and the only girl, she felt a strong obligation to support her family. While working on the farm, Nabuli managed to balance household chores and farming tasks, such as planting watermelons and other vegetables, while still attending rugby training in the afternoons.
Her journey eventually led her to the national women’s 7s team, an opportunity she cherishes. Nabuli credits her family’s unwavering support for her success, stating that they have always encouraged her to improve both personally and in her rugby career. They continually remind her to maintain discipline and respect while in training, viewing this opportunity as a chance to make them proud.
Nabuli, a true highland girl, has a particular fondness for leafy green vegetables, with rourou (taro leaves) being her favorite dish. At the Fijian Drua women’s camp, it became a running joke that she would often request rourou, even asking for cooked lettuce, illustrating her homesickness.
Inspired by rugby star Semi Radradra, Nabuli strives to enhance her skills with every match. She emphasizes the importance of obedience and discipline in her current position, encouraging young people to listen to their parents. Nabuli expresses her gratitude for the blessings she has received, including the opportunity to represent Fiji.
