Meet Nemai Diloma, a dynamic young woman who is shattering barriers as a Roving Sector Assistant with Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) in Nadi. At the age of 26, Nemai is already leaving her footprint in the sugar sector. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Fiji National University (FNU), and her enthusiasm for the industry ignited when she joined FSC earlier this year.

“This role provides an incredible platform to apply my academic knowledge while acquiring hands-on experience in an industry that’s crucial for Fiji’s economy,” she stated. As a Roving Sector Assistant, Nemai aids sugarcane growers at every stage, from planting to harvesting. Her dedication to high-quality sugar production is evident in her proactive collaboration with farmers.

“I enjoy working with the growers; each day presents fresh challenges and learning opportunities,” she expressed. Despite the hurdles of language differences and a male-dominated environment, Nemai’s determination and adaptability have been pivotal to her achievements.

“I have enhanced my communication skills through a willingness to learn, which is crucial for forging strong connections with our growers,” she remarked. Recently, she successfully guided a group of growers during a demanding planting season, showcasing her leadership capabilities.

A significant moment in her career arose when she took charge in a colleague’s absence, reinforcing her conviction that women can thrive in agricultural leadership roles. Her team’s successful navigation of the planting season, in spite of obstacles, underscores her effective leadership.

Nemai is thankful for the mentorship and support she has gained at FSC, attributing her development to them. The encouragement from her peers has been vital in her journey, highlighting the significance of a nurturing work environment for empowering women.

“The support from my colleagues has been essential. Teamwork, punctuality, and commitment are key to reaching our objectives in the sugar industry,” she stressed.
