Breaking Barriers: A Stay-at-Home Mom’s Journey into Engineering

Joana Adimila, a stay-at-home mother, has successfully pursued her educational aspirations despite her circumstances. During a recent 12-week training program offered by the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC), she re-entered the world of formal education after being away for over a decade.

Adimila primarily supported her family through her jewellery business, but she continued to seek new opportunities during challenging times. She expressed her renewed experience as a student, saying, “Experiencing what it’s like to be a student again after years at home was refreshing.”

She expressed gratitude for the chances APTC provided, which enabled her to explore new potential career paths. On Wednesday, Adimila graduated with a Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, focusing on welding and fabrication.

Although working in a male-dominated field presents its challenges, she emphasized the need for more women in engineering. Transitioning from her small business to other career options has not been an easy journey, but she is prepared with her new skills. “I am ready with my newly acquired knowledge because I want to have a better future,” she said.
