Breaking Barriers: A Policewoman’s Journey Through Family and Duty

Police Constable Sadamma from the Labasa Police Station recently shared her inspiring journey as a woman balancing the demanding roles of a police officer, mother, and wife. Her remarks came during a ceremony where she and 37 other officers from the Northern Division received Long Service and Good Conduct medals, awarded by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew at the Labasa Civic Centre.

With a dedicated 20-year career in the Fiji Police Force, Sadamma has navigated her professional journey through various police stations, including prominent ones in Suva and Lautoka. Reflecting on her experiences, she acknowledged the early challenges of working in a predominantly male-dominated environment but credited her family’s support and the understanding of her superiors for her success. “It wasn’t easy at first,” she noted, but with perseverance, she found ways to excel in her role.

Currently part of the Sexual Offence Unit, Sadamma specializes in sensitive cases involving children and women, a position that aligns with her passion for helping vulnerable communities. “I chose to become a Policewoman because I wanted to help others, especially women and children,” she expressed, emphasizing the significance of her work.

Sadamma also offered encouragement to young women aspiring to join the police force, stressing the importance of hard work and determination. “Nothing comes easy in life; everyone needs to either work hard or smart to have a fulfilling career,” she stated, acknowledging that maintaining a balance between professional and personal life is challenging yet achievable.

Her story serves as both a personal triumph and a beacon of hope for women in similar situations, reinforcing the idea that with support and dedication, it is possible to overcome obstacles and pursue meaningful careers. This recognition of her commitment contributes to a broader narrative of increasing gender equality within the field of law enforcement, inspiring future generations to chase their aspirations with confidence.

In summary, PC Sadamma’s journey illustrates the resilience of women who aspire to thrive in challenging roles, showcasing the vital combination of community support, personal strength, and professional dedication in overcoming gender-based challenges in the workforce.
