Kelera Vela has demonstrated that women can break through barriers in male-dominated fields during the recent Pacific Polytech graduation ceremony held at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa. Among the 105 graduates, Vela, a former firefighter volunteer with seven years of service at the National Fire Authority, showcased her determination to succeed in the automotive industry.

At 30 years old and a mother of two, Vela, a resident of Vuniwai Village in Seaqaqa, Macuata, earned a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Level Three. She passionately advocates for women’s capabilities in traditionally male roles, stating, “Female electricians can do equally well as male and I want to be one of them.”

Her journey included a break from her firefighting volunteer work to care for her children, aged three and nine. Vela expressed gratitude to her husband, Salato Ramoce, for his support in allowing her to return to her studies. “Balancing the responsibilities of being a mother, wife, and student was challenging, but I succeeded with the backing of my husband and trainers,” she remarked.

Vela emphasized the importance of a supportive educational environment and encouraged other women to pursue their career aspirations, regardless of the prevalence of male dominance in trades.

This inspiring story highlights not only Vela’s personal achievements but also serves as a beacon of hope for women everywhere, demonstrating that with perseverance and support, they can break stereotypes and excel in any field they choose.

In summary, Kelera Vela’s graduation signifies a step forward for women in skilled trades, showcasing the potential and resilience of women in overcoming traditional gender roles.
