Kelera Vela has demonstrated that women can excel in traditionally male-dominated fields during her graduation at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa yesterday. The 30-year-old, who has a rich background serving as a firefighter volunteer for seven years at the National Fire Authority stations in Taveuni and Labasa, was one of 105 graduates celebrated during the event.
Originally from Vuniwai Village in Seaqaqa, Macuata, Vela earned a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Level Three. She expressed her determination to succeed in the electrical trade, stating, “Female electricians can do equally well as male, and I want to be one of them.”
Her journey included a brief pause to care for her children, aged three and nine, after finishing Year 13 at All Saints Secondary School in Labasa. Vela acknowledged her husband, Salato Ramoce, for his support in allowing her to return to education. “It wasn’t easy holding numerous roles of a mother, wife, and student, but I managed through the support of my husband and trainers,” she explained.
Vela appreciated the role of understanding trainers in fostering a conducive learning environment, emphasizing that support can motivate any student to complete their education. She encourages other women to pursue their chosen careers, regardless of the male dominance often seen in trade occupations.
This inspiring story reflects a positive shift toward gender inclusivity in various professional fields, proving that determination and support can lead to success for women in all careers. Vela’s achievement not only paves the way for her but also inspires countless other women to follow their dreams and break barriers.
