Kelera Vela has demonstrated that women can excel in traditionally male-dominated fields during the graduation ceremony at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa. Ms. Vela, a former firefighter volunteer for seven years with the National Fire Authority in Taveuni and Labasa, was among the 105 graduates celebrated at the event.

At 30 years old and a mother of two, originally from Vuniwai Village in Seaqaqa, Macuata, she proudly received a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Level Three. “Female electricians can perform just as well as their male counterparts, and I aspire to be one of them,” Ms. Vela stated.

After completing her Year 13 education at All Saints Secondary School in Labasa, she dedicated her time to volunteer firefighting before becoming a full-time mother to her children, now three and nine years old. Ms. Vela expressed her gratitude towards her husband, Salato Ramoce, an employee at Bula Earthworks, for supporting her in resuming her studies.

“It wasn’t easy balancing the roles of a mother, wife, and student, but with the encouragement from my husband and trainers, I managed to succeed,” she shared. Ms. Vela emphasized the importance of supportive trainers in creating a conducive learning environment, stating that this can inspire students to complete their education.

She encourages women to pursue their desired careers, regardless of the dominance of men in certain trades. This positive message not only inspires women to break barriers but also highlights the importance of support systems in achieving educational and professional goals.

Overall, Ms. Vela’s journey serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment, illustrating that with determination and support, women can thrive in any profession they choose.
