In the midst of the chaos, 25-year-old Meli Balenivalu, an employee at the supermarket, demonstrated remarkable bravery by rushing to the scene to assist.
Upon hearing distressing cries, Balenivalu sprinted towards the pharmacy aisle where he discovered a wounded colleague and his supervisor attempting to hold back the assailant. Without hesitation, he intervened in an effort to protect others, even as the attacker momentarily broke free and harmed staff. During a ceremony for the New Zealand Bravery Awards, Luxon recognized Balenivalu and 34 other honorees for their extraordinary courage amid a shocking daytime attack. The Prime Minister expressed pride in the ordinary citizens who acted selflessly to protect others and offered gratitude to those who stepped forward during this dangerous event.
Reflecting on the incident while currently employed in the mental health sector at Dunedin Hospital, Balenivalu shared his immediate instinct to protect and help others. He acknowledged the emotional toll it took on him following the attack but credited his supportive family for aiding him through those challenging times.
