Kraigg Brathwaite has announced his resignation as the captain of the West Indies Test team, as confirmed by Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Monday. The 32-year-old led the West Indies in 39 Test matches and notably achieved a landmark victory in Australia, securing the team’s first Test win on Australian soil in 27 years with a nail-biting eight-run victory in Brisbane in 2024.
CWI expressed its profound gratitude for Brathwaite’s dedication and leadership, highlighting his contributions to West Indies cricket and the significant milestones accomplished under his captaincy. Wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope, aged 31, is taking over as the captain for the West Indies’ T20 team while continuing his role as the captain of the one-day international (ODI) squad. Hope’s appointment follows Rovman Powell, who had been at the helm of the T20 side since 2023.
Brathwaite’s leadership journey has brought both challenges and successes, making his departure a pivotal moment for the team. The installment of Hope as T20 captain signals a shift in leadership that may bring fresh perspectives and strategies to the team as they look to rebuild and advance in international competitions.
This change comes at a time when the West Indies cricket team is looking to establish itself more firmly in the competitive international scene. The focus will now be on how both the team and the new captain can harness their potential moving forward, fostering hope for the future of West Indies cricket.
