Boris van der Vorst, president of World Boxing, has expressed his enthusiasm following the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to grant the federation provisional recognition. This development comes at a crucial time, as boxing for the Paris 2024 Olympics is being managed by the IOC due to the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) loss of recognition stemming from governance and financial issues.

The IOC’s provisional recognition reflects World Boxing’s progress in various critical areas, such as enhancing governance structures, complying with the World Anti-Doping Code, and ensuring independent oversight. Van der Vorst highlighted the importance of showcasing their capability to act as a responsible international governing body, committed to making Olympic opportunities accessible for boxing gyms around the world.

While this recognition is a positive sign for the sport and might pave the way for inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, Van der Vorst emphasized the substantial work ahead. He remarked, “Everyone within World Boxing understands that being part of the Olympic movement is a privilege and a responsibility and not a right.”

Additionally, amid ongoing challenges in the boxing community, particularly regarding the IBA’s controversies over athlete eligibility, Van der Vorst reassured that the safety of athletes remains a top priority. Efforts are underway to establish a medical committee that will focus on creating fair policies surrounding sex, age, and weight classifications to protect athlete welfare.

This latest recognition from the IOC signals a potential turning point for boxing, particularly in light of past struggles that led to the formation of World Boxing. With enhanced governance and a focus on inclusivity, there is hope for a bright future for boxing on a global scale. As the organization navigates the path forward, it has the potential to restore integrity to the sport and foster grassroots participation, ensuring boxing remains a dynamic and vital component of the Olympic movement.

The challenges ahead may be daunting, yet Van der Vorst’s passion for the sport indicates a strong commitment to revitalizing boxing’s role within the Olympic framework, offering renewed hope to athletes and fans alike.
