Boxing Trainer Urges Silence Amid Ongoing Death Investigation

Renowned boxing trainer Lepani Wilson has urged the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) to refrain from public statements as the investigation into Ubayd Haider’s death continues. Wilson’s comments came in response to a press conference held last Friday by BCF Chairman Adi Narayan and board member Eroni Loganimoce, who discussed the suspension of the South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP) license, attributing it to promoter Fred Chand’s controversial remarks on social media.

Wilson expressed concern about the ongoing investigation, stating that respect should be given to the grieving family affected by this tragic event. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting the necessity for maturity while navigating sensitive matters. Drawing from his past experiences, Wilson recalled his involvement during the 1990s when boxer Filimoni Takayawa died while he was president of the Professional Boxing Wrestling Association (PBWA). In that scenario, rather than assigning blame, he collaborated with various stakeholders including boxing bodies, promoters, and government representatives to ensure safety measures for boxers were established and adhered to.

He highlighted that accountability should not rest solely on one individual, such as the promoter, but instead be recognized as a shared responsibility among all those involved in the sport. Wilson believes that improving safety protocols and enforcing them rigorously are crucial steps to prevent future tragedies in boxing.

In light of this situation, the boxing community is called to come together in support and understanding, fostering an environment where the well-being of athletes is prioritized. It is a moment for reflection and reform, aimed at ensuring the safety and integrity of the sport moving forward.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and responsible action in the face of challenges. Through cooperation and the enhancement of safety measures, the boxing community can strive to create a more secure environment for all participants.
