An investigation is set to begin regarding the serious incident involving Ubayd Haider, a featherweight boxer who collapsed following his fight on Saturday. Haider is currently in critical condition at Lautoka Aspen Hospital, having undergone surgery for a head injury and remaining in a coma in the Intensive Care Unit.
Acting Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka has indicated that he will consult with the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, to address the situation. Gavoka emphasized the importance of safety in contact sports like boxing, advocating for stricter regulations to protect athletes from potential health risks. He commented on the need for proper preparation and awareness of the risks involved, specifically mentioning dehydration and its impact on the body during high-stakes matches.
The incident occurred after Haider’s ninth round TKO (technical knockout) defeat to Australia’s Runqi Zhou in their IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title fight at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.
Sonny Bill Williams, a sports legend and the chief guest at the event, expressed his concern and hope for Haider’s recovery. Williams shared that he visited Haider at the hospital, showing support for his family during this difficult time. He acknowledged that while they can only pray for Haider’s recovery, they remain optimistic.
Haider’s wife, Helen, has requested that the public respect the family’s privacy as they navigate this challenging period. She noted that medical staff are closely monitoring him in the following days, allowing only close relatives to visit.
This situation highlights the inherent risks associated with contact sports and the necessity for ongoing dialogue about athlete safety. As Ubayd Haider fights for his life, the boxing community and beyond are rallying in support, offering prayers and well-wishes for a full recovery. It is a reminder of the strength and resilience found in community bonds during trying times.
