An investigation is set to take place regarding the troubling incident involving featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider, who collapsed following his fight on Saturday and is currently fighting for his life at Lautoka Aspen Hospital. Haider sustained a head injury during his bout, underwent surgery on Sunday, and remains in a coma in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka spoke to SUNsports, emphasizing the importance of safety in contact sports like boxing. He plans to consult with the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, to address the need for proper regulations and preparation.

Gavoka stated, “We need to be careful with how we prepare our people and understand the rules and risks involved.” He pointed out that dehydration can severely impact an athlete’s performance and overall health, increasing the likelihood of serious injuries during competition. It is clear that there is a pressing need for stricter regulations to ensure the safety of athletes.

Ubayd Haider suffered a ninth-round technical knockout (TKO) loss to Australia’s Runqi Zhou during their IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title fight held at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park. Sports legend Sonny Bill Williams, who was present at the event, expressed his support for Haider and his family, stating that they are holding onto hope for his recovery. “He’s in our daily prayers, and we’ve been praying a lot,” Williams said.

Haider’s wife, Helen, has requested privacy for the family during this difficult time, as medical staff continue to monitor his condition closely over the next few days. Only close relatives are permitted to visit.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with contact sports and the critical importance of ensuring athletes’ safety. While the situation remains serious, the collective support and prayers from friends, family, and the wider community highlight the hope for Haider’s recovery.

In summary, Ubayd Haider is currently in critical condition following a boxing match, prompting calls for greater safety measures within the sport. The support from loved ones and the community is a beacon of hope during this challenging time.
