An investigation is set to be initiated regarding the critical incident involving Ubayd Haider, a featherweight boxer who collapsed after his recent match. Haider is currently in a serious condition at Lautoka Aspen Hospital, where he underwent surgery following a head injury sustained during the fight and is now in a coma in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The situation was addressed by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, who emphasized the need for caution when it comes to contact sports like boxing. He plans to consult with the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, to discuss the importance of safety regulations in the sport.
Gavoka highlighted the dangers of dehydration and the physical strain fighters endure, which can lead to severe consequences. He advocates for more stringent regulations to ensure the safety of athletes in such demanding sports.
Haider faced a ninth-round TKO loss against Australia’s Runqi Zhou, competing for the IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park.
Sports icon Sonny Bill Williams, who attended the event, expressed his support for Haider and his family, stating that everyone is holding onto hope through prayer. He indicated the gravity of the situation, mentioning that Haider’s condition remains uncertain but is holding on.
Haider’s wife, Helen, has requested the public to respect their family’s privacy during this difficult period. She mentioned that Haider will be closely monitored over the next few days, with visitation restricted to close relatives.
This incident has raised critical awareness about the risks associated with combat sports and the need for improved fighter safety protocols. The sporting community stands united in support of Haider and his loved ones, highlighting the resilience and strength that can emerge from challenging situations.
In a time filled with uncertainty, it is hopeful to see the collective spirit of support and prayers for Haider’s recovery, reminding us of the importance of community and compassion in the face of adversity.
