Tragic news surrounds the boxing community as the late featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider’s final moments were revealed during his funeral service in Suva yesterday. His elder brother, Sebastian Singh, disclosed that Haider had fallen ill just two days before his last fight held in Nadi, but despite requesting to be excused due to his health, he chose to fight for his nation.
Speaking emotionally to a crowd at the National Gymnasium that included Sports Minister Jese Saukuru, Singh shared how Haider persevered through nine grueling rounds. “He was sick two days before the fight. He knew he was fighting for his nation. He had asked to be excused from the fight. He was manipulated,” Singh expressed.
He highlighted Haider’s tenacity and dedication to the sport, referring to him as a true warrior and expressing pride in his brother’s efforts in the ring. Singh emphasized, “We will send this warrior off with a smile on our faces knowing too well that he has left behind a legacy.”
Haider, who passed away at the age of 25 after battling serious head injuries for 16 days in Lautoka Hospital, was buried at the Raralevu Cemetery in Nausori. He is survived by his wife, Helen, and their two young sons, leaving a profound impact on his family and the boxing community.
In these challenging times, the commitment and passion demonstrated by Ubayd Haider serve as a reminder of the dedication athletes have towards their sport and their nations. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire many future boxers in Fiji and beyond.
