The investigation into the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider is progressing, with all local individuals connected to the fight already interviewed. Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, recently confirmed that only six individuals from overseas remain to be questioned, and he expects the investigation to wrap up this week.
Saukuru outlined that the remaining individuals yet to be interviewed include key personnel such as Mohammed Shameem, the director of South Pacific Boxing Promotion, promoter Fred Chand, IBO Fight Commissioner Justin Kennedy, referee Ignatius Missailidis, and several international experts.
Haider sustained severe injuries following a ninth-round TKO loss to Sydney’s Runqi Zhou during an IBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title bout on October 26 at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park. After collapsing, he was taken for emergency treatment but sadly passed away on November 10, with his burial occurring on November 12 at Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu. His death marks a somber moment in Fijian boxing history, as he is the fourth boxer from the nation to succumb to head injuries suffered in the ring, following previous fatalities in the sport dating back to the mid-20th century.
Saukuru emphasized the importance of athlete welfare amidst growing concerns about the timing of stoppages during fights. He highlighted that only the referee and the boxer’s corner are authorized to call off a match. As the investigation continues, he assured the public that answers will be forthcoming.
The inquiry has the potential to uncover any criminal liability, and Saukuru stated that further considerations must be made before the Board for Enquiry submits its findings.
It is hopeful that the conclusion of this investigation will lead to improvements in safety protocols within the boxing community, ultimately protecting athletes and preventing tragedies in the future. This incident serves as a critical reminder for all sports organizations to prioritize the health and safety of their participants.
In summary, the investigation into Ubayd Haider’s death is nearing completion, with key interviews pending, and the focus remains on enhancing athlete safety to prevent similar tragedies moving forward.
