An investigation is underway following the tragic death of Featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider, formerly known as Nathan Singh, at Lautoka Hospital on Sunday. The Minister for Youth and Sport, Jese Saukuru, announced that a Board of Inquiry (BOI) has been formed to uncover the circumstances leading to this incident.
Initially, former military officer Pita Driti was appointed to lead the investigation; however, he has since stepped down from the role, prompting the search for a new leader to direct this critical inquiry. Saukuru emphasized the importance of athlete welfare and expressed his determination to understand what occurred, revealing that issues relating to the conduct of those involved in the event require attention.
Saukuru also assured that his Ministry is actively supporting Haider’s family during this difficult time and has offered assistance in any way possible. A service is planned to celebrate Haider’s life, highlighting the community’s support for his family amidst their grief.
This incident serves as a reminder of the need for safety protocols in sports and the importance of athlete wellbeing. As investigations proceed, there is hope that necessary measures will be implemented to prevent similar tragedies in the future, ultimately leading to safer sporting environments for all athletes.
