The investigation into the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider is progressing, as the team has already conducted interviews with all local individuals who were involved in the recent match. Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru confirmed that only the six overseas associates remain to be interviewed, with the expectation that the investigation will conclude this week.
Saukuru noted, “Once the interviews are compiled along with the submitted report, a decision will be made.” Those still awaiting questioning include South Pacific Boxing Promotion director Mohammed Shameem, promoter Fred Chand, IBO Fight Commissioner Justin Kennedy, referee Ignatuis Missailidis, and various overseas experts.
Haider tragically collapsed following a ninth-round TKO loss against Sydney’s Runqi Zhou during the IBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title fight on October 26. He was immediately taken to Zen’s Medical before being moved to Aspen Hospital in Lautoka for emergency head surgery. Unfortunately, Haider did not recover and passed away on November 10, with his burial taking place on November 12 in Raralevu Cemetery, Tailevu.
This incident marks a sorrowful moment in boxing history, as Haider becomes the fourth boxer from Fiji to have died due to head injuries sustained in the ring, joining the ranks of Semi Galoa in 1953, Waisea Tavusa in 1975, and Filimoni Takayawa in 1990.
Saukuru emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of athletes amidst concerns about why the fight was not halted sooner. In a prior statement, Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) chairman Adi Narayan explained that only the referee and the boxer’s corner man possess the authority to stop a fight.
As the investigation unfolds, Saukuru mentioned there are still many complexities to address, indicating that it could potentially reveal criminal offenses. He assured the public that clarity on the investigation’s outcome will be provided soon.
