Veteran boxing trainer John Ramos has urged Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports, to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of boxer Ubayd Haider, focusing specifically on the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF). In an interview with SUNsports, Ramos expressed his concerns regarding the BCF’s decision to allow the boxing event on October 26 to proceed without having an ambulance present or conducting a drug test.
Ramos stated, “The Minister should look into why the boxing permit was granted when the promoter did not have an ambulance on site plus there were no drug tests conducted. The event should have been halted until these critical requirements were fulfilled. This needs to be investigated.” He emphasized the importance of accountability and urged the Minister to prioritize the investigation into the BCF directors who approved the event.
Sydney-based trainer Lepani Wilson echoed Ramos’s sentiments, calling on the BCF to take responsibility rather than deflect blame. Wilson shared his experience as a former president of the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association of Fiji, where he made it a point to ensure all necessary preparations were in place before any fight commenced.
BCF Chairman Adi Narayan responded to the accusations by clarifying that the title fight was sanctioned by the International Boxing Organization (IBO), and the BCF’s role was primarily to approve it following IBO’s confirmation. He explained that the ambulance stipulation was part of the promoter’s obligations. Narayan recounted a conversation with the promoter on the morning of the event, where he was assured that all necessary arrangements were made. He acknowledged the challenges he faces as chairman, which include not only overseeing the event logistics but also managing the officials’ readiness at ringside.
