Boxing Star Ubayd Haider Remembered: A Heartfelt Farewell

Spread the love

Hundreds gathered at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva to pay tribute to Ubayd Haider, Fiji’s former super featherweight and lightweight boxing champion, who passed away this week. The poignant farewell saw a diverse crowd, including sports officials, politicians, business leaders, and members of the boxing community, come together to celebrate Haider’s life and contributions to the sport.

Haider, previously known as Nathan Singh, succumbed late Sunday after spending over two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at Lautoka Aspen Hospital. His health had declined following a recent bout, where he tragically collapsed after losing to Runqi Zhou in an International Boxing Association (IBO) Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title fight on October 26. Despite feeling unwell four days prior to the match, Haider fought valiantly until the ninth round, showcasing his determination and fighting spirit.

During the service, SPBP director Mohammed Shameem sent condolences from Canada, highlighting Haider’s kindness and significant impact on boxing in Fiji. He urged everyone to carry forward the lessons learned from the late champion. Sebastian Singh, Haider’s older brother, expressed gratitude for the support their family received during this difficult time and emphasized the immense love his brother garnered worldwide.

Prominent figures such as former sporting star Sonny Bill Williams and veteran trainer John Ramos also conveyed their condolences, underscoring the loss felt across the boxing sphere. Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, assured the family that the ministry would ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Haider’s passing.

In a show of solidarity and respect, Haider was laid to rest at the Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and passion for boxing.

This powerful tribute not only reflects the deep respect and love held for Ubayd Haider but also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of sportsmanship. His contributions to boxing have left an indelible mark on the sport in Fiji, and as mourners gathered to honor his memory, they collectively committed to upholding the values he represented.
