Bringing three International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Asia Pacific titles to Fiji is a significant financial undertaking. It requires the participation of top boxers from the region, their trainers, and IBO officials to adhere to all regulations, along with meeting the standards set by the Boxing Commission of Fiji.
South Pacific Boxing Promotions director Mohammed Shameem disclosed that organizing the event will exceed $100,000. Speaking with SUNsports, the Vancouver-based promoter shared his lifelong passion for boxing, which began in the 1960s when his father, Noor Mohammed, was involved in promoting.
Shameem recalled watching his father’s boxing events as a child, including a match in which Filimoni Naliva defeated Marika Naivalu for the Fiji heavyweight title. As a successful businessman, he continuously gives back to communities, stating, “Fiji is always home to me.” He previously promoted Naliva’s son, Savenaca, to become Fiji’s light heavyweight champion.
This promotion marks Shameem’s 19th event, with South Pacific Boxing Promotions having brought boxing to various locations including Ba, Lautoka, and Labasa, contributing to local clubs and communities. Despite facing financial losses in most events, he finds fulfillment in positively impacting lives.
Notably, sports legend Sonny Bill Williams (SBW) is set to arrive in the country today as the event’s chief guest. Williams will engage with schools, communities, and hospitals, focusing on educating young individuals about the dangers of drug use.
Shameem noted that this will be the largest event he has organized, featuring a total of four title fights, including three IBO titles and one Fiji title. He aims for the event to showcase Fiji’s potential to produce world champions.
In other news, Tonga Tongotongo, known as Australia’s knockout king, has arrived to defend his IBO Asia Pacific cruiserweight title against local fighter Sebastian ‘The Sniper’ Singh. Tongotongo boasts an unbeaten record of eight knockout victories and anticipates a tough match against Singh.
Additionally, Lachlan O’Shea from Australia has also arrived to challenge Winston Hill for the IBO Asia Pacific super welterweight title. O’Shea expressed his honor in participating as a challenger and is eager for an exciting bout in the ring.
