Plans are underway to establish a boxing gym in Labasa aimed at revitalizing both amateur and professional boxing in Vanua Levu. This initiative was highlighted by Samuela Ligairi, the special administrator of the Labasa Town Council, during an interview with SUNsports last Saturday.
Ligairi participated in the South Pacific Boxing Promotion event at Subrail Park, marking the return of professional boxing to Labasa after a nine-year hiatus. He emphasized that the Labasa Town Council is committed to reviving the sport through this new development project.
The proposed location for the gym is near the botanical garden at Lions Park. Ligairi indicated that construction would begin shortly, bolstered by potential funding from the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Boxing Commission of Fiji. The facility will include a training boxing ring and a fully equipped gym.
Given the limited space at the existing Nasekula Gym, Ligairi stated that the new gym will provide a more spacious environment to accommodate aspiring athletes. The Labasa Town Council is also in talks with the Macuata Rugby Union to facilitate the development of a larger gym in the area. The MRU previously assisted in establishing the Nasekula gym, which received equipment donations from the Silktails Rugby League Club. Additionally, the Labasa Town Council has reached out to various Non-Governmental Organizations for support in this endeavor.
Ligairi believes that this development will not only enhance the financial standing of the Labasa Town Council but also inspire individuals to pursue boxing and achieve their potential. He noted that hosting significant sporting events, such as the Digicel Fiji FACT football tournament, the Fiji Secondary Schools rugby competition (Vodafone Deans Trophy), and boxing promotions, has revitalized the community in Vanua Levu.
“This initiative is a comprehensive strategy that benefits not just the council but also the local economy, providing opportunities for hoteliers, taxi drivers, market vendors, and restaurants to share in the economic gains,” Ligairi added.
