Boxing Revival on the Horizon for Labasa

Plans are underway to establish a boxing gym in Labasa aimed at revitalizing both amateur and professional boxing in Vanua Levu. This initiative was shared by Labasa Town Council special administrator Samuela Ligairi during an interview with SUNsports last Saturday. Ligairi participated in the South Pacific Boxing Promotion event at Subrail Park, marking the return of professional boxing to Labasa after a nine-year hiatus.

The proposed gym is to be located near the botanical garden at Lions Park, with plans for construction expected to begin soon. The project is anticipated to receive funding assistance from the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Boxing Commission of Fiji. Ligairi highlighted that the facility will feature a boxing ring and be fully equipped for training.

Due to limited space at the existing Nasekula Gym, the LTC aims to create a larger venue to accommodate more sports enthusiasts. Collaborations are in progress with the Macuata Rugby Union (MRU) to facilitate the development of this larger gym. The MRU previously contributed to the establishment of the Nasekula gym with equipment donations from Silktails Rugby League Club. The LTC has also reached out to various Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for support in this venture.

Ligairi expressed confidence that the new facility would enhance the financial standing of the LTC while motivating more individuals to participate in boxing and realize their potential. He noted that hosting major sporting events, such as the Digicel Fiji FACT football tournament and the Vodafone Deans Trophy for rugby, has already reinvigorated the community in Vanua Levu.

He stated, “This initiative will benefit not only the council but also the local economy, providing opportunities for hoteliers, taxi operators, market vendors, and restaurants to share in the economic gains.”
